Free Online Tools for Tracking Your Goals

setting goals

I appreciate your patience over the last couple of days as we’ve been working through some server issues. Everything should be up and running smoothly now! My monthly column is up at Simple Mom, and we’re talking about tools to help you track your goals:

This month at Simple Mom, Tsh is focusing on reviewing — and renewing — our goals. I’ve heard it said that New Year’s resolutions shouldn’t be made in January but rather in September, and it’s true: there is something about the end of summer and the start of the school year that leaves me refreshed and ready to tackle the goals I’ve set for myself!

Today, I want to share with you some free online tools that are available to help you track and achieve your goals. I haven’t used all of these myself, but I’ve read tons of reviews on them, and I think they represent the best of the best. Please feel free to share your experiences – and other services you use to track your goals – in the comments.

Tracking your goals — whether on paper, online, on your phone or on your desktop — is an important part of staying motivated and on track. The cliche “out of sight, out of mind” was coined for a reason, and it’s important to keep any new habit or goal front and center where you can practice thinking about it and making the changes necessary to achieve it.

That’s a great tip, Abbi — thanks for sharing!

I enjoyed guest posting and hosting a guest post as part of the Ultimate Blog Swap.  It gave me a positive, even though it was the first, experience on both ends of guest posting.  I’d definitely like to host more guests and guest post.

I love your point about guest posts that are really just link bait. I see those so often and I wonder, do bloggers not realize what’s going on there? Or do they just not care? Most of the links lead to really suspect websites too!

Last year I created guest post guidelines and included all the things you suggested.  I posted them under a button on my nav bar.  It has helped tremendously. I’ve gotten some great guest posts to help me during times I cannot blog or would like to take a break.

Here are my guest post issues:I am an idiot.  I had no idea about “link bait,” and I am still not sure how to tactfully handle those submissions.  The ones I’ve gotten have been some of the most well-written guest posts I’ve ever gotten and they’ve fallen right in with the over-all theme of my blogs.  The links only appear in the bio, where I would expect to put a link for the author anyway.  They seem to be a lot of college-related sites–nothing questionable so far, but definitely not bloggers active in the community. I don’t know if I should keep accepting these or if it makes me look like a fool.  Help!!When I DO get submissions from my blog readers or those active in the blog community, and it’s just a so-so post–do I reject it or do I just go ahead and post it?  I have one, for example, that a precious reader/commenter submitted.    It’s not terrible…but it’s not really a great post.  I don’t love it.  I don’t know what to do with it.  I’ve been sitting on it for a long time…like months.  How do you tactfully reject a post if it’s just not “great” but meets all the requirements?  I don’t want to hurt her feelings.  Know what I mean?I would love any input you have on these issues.  Thanks!!!

Uggghhh…I just researched the author of a guest post I ran just last week.  She totally fabricated a story for my blog, based on the bio I found of her on the website she linked to in her post.  Totally inconsistent.  I feel duped.  I’ve borrowed a portion of the language you use here about the link bait to craft a new portion to my guidelines.  Thank you so much for pointing this out.  Live and learn.
