Question of the Day: How Many Open Windows?

by Mandi on May 26, 2010

No, not that kind of window…application windows on your computer.

I’ve read a few tweets and posts this week from people who are overwhelmed by the 267 windows or tabs that they usually keep open at once, and so today I want to know…

How many windows do you have open on your computer right now?

How many do you usually have open?

Have you ever tried the minimalist approach to having fewer open?

Do you see the number of windows as a problem, or do you like things the way they are?

What tips do you have fore keeping less open at once?

Can’t wait to read your answers in the comments, and I’ll be sharing mine as well!

Right now, I have four tabs open in Firefox and a separate Word document open.

My mom always says that I’m easily overwhelmed because I “can’t see the trees for the forest”, a play on the more common “can’t see the forest for the trees,” and it’s true. If I have too much going on at once, I have no idea how to get started…which usually results in me doing nothing.

Sometimes I will have more tabs open, like when I’m bookmarking posts for Tumblr, and I usually have a Skype window or two open as well. But in general, I try to bookmark pages to read later and close the ones I’m finished with so that it doesn’t overwhelm me!

    How about you?

When I read the title on my reader, I was thinking of my house, in which every single window is open right not.

Anyway, I also read something this week about someone having a lot of windows open and maybe I’m missing something, but I don’t keep windows open like that. I might have about 5 open at any given time: reader, gmail, hotmail, blogger, msn, and maybe twitter.

I have 8 open right now. I don’t like too many open at once, so I try to close up what I’m not using.

Right now I have 5 open. 2 tabs open on Google Chrome, 1 on excel, 1 on Adobe Reader and 1 on Skype. Sometimes I have much more open. It gets overwhelming at times. Working from home prevents me from closing some of them. I’m sure I’ll get a call on Skype any second now. Have a great day, Mandi!

Right now I have 4 windows open (IE, Outlook, Accounting Software and Excel). There are only 2 tabs open in IE. (Yes, IE sucks, but it isn’t my computer so I can’t change the browser)

Anyway, sometimes there will be more windows open depending on what I’m working on, but I do try to limit how many are open because it can get overwhelming.

Hi everyone! I typically have 2 windows open and that’s only to do something real quick and then I close the one. WHen I’m researching for my blog, I’ll open all the windows I need and go to them one by one and delete them as I’m done. I get crazy with windows open too long.

I have one window open in Firefox, but 15 tabs. And I’m getting ready to open up a whole bunch more… I used my tabs almost like a to do list… I open up everything I want to read/do throughout the day, and I close them as I finish them. I’m pretty happy with that arrangement – it seems to work well for me!

I have one window open with 4 tabs. I can handle up to 5 tabs open, but then I start getting “close happy.” I love that on a Mac, when you minimize the window it goes to a little picture of itself on the bottom. Way less overwhelming than all the words :-)

When I have a lot open it usually means I’m procrastinating on some action or other on those open windows :P Right now I have 10 and that’s where I like it. I alway shave my email and my reader open. I try to keep it at 10, but it’s not always easy. It’s usually more like 20! I can’t believe some have 267, that’s insane!!

Currently, I have 9 tabs open in Google Chrome. It varies throughout the day, but I start to feel a bit stressed if I have too many open. 10 is about normal. It goes up if I have several tabs open for things that I need to do (like add something to a blog, or register for something, etc.), but more than is pushing it for me. I have to start decluttering at that point. LOL! Currently, Google is the ONLY thing I have open, but I do occasionally have One Note or Word open too.

Not that you asked, but what DO I have open? Email – Your Site – Facebook – Happily Domestic – My Homeschool Bog(Site) – My Homeschool Blog (Admin) – My Frugal Living Blog (Site) – My Frugal Living Blog (Admin) – Feedburner – Google Search The first 7 are pretty standard. The last two are ‘cuz SIL is trying to help me figure out WHY my frugal living site’s links RARELY open for her! I don’t have anything else “pending” as I haven’t started posting for today!

    I win, I win!

For starters, noticing your link made me open another tab, and another to see what Oh Amanda had to to say yesterday while reading the comments. I have:
8 Firefox wdws, each w/multiple tabs (this one, for example, has too many to see them all, which means >15, and I know the one with my email is the same)
    Skype
    Tweetdeck
    Excel
    15 MS word wdws
    3 Live Writer wdws
    notepad
    Acrobat (just one)
    YNAB
    Paint

Sigh….lots of work to do tonight, yeah?
I think I’ll just accept that it’s chronic and put “organize windows” and “test Evernote” on my written lists – one of many! ;) Katie

Right now I have 8. 4 tabs in firefox, a download window in FF, a yahoo chat window and 2 pdfs open. As well as pop up messages from tweetdeck. (I did just close a googlechat window too).

This is about my normal. I like to have things open so I don’t lose them. I open things and then as I finish them I close them, but as I go about the day, more things get opened, so it stays around 8 to 10 windows/tabs I’d say.

Great question ~ my first thought was NONE ~ we finally turned on the AC when it got to 85 degrees and 80% humidity in here a couple days ago lol.

At the moment I have three open. Work email, this one and a previous.

It is common for me to have about 3-5 during the day and up to 10 at night.

I recently skimmed an article about NOT multitasking and have multitasking may actually mean that some of us never get things done to full detail. We just add stress to our lives.

My husband does not have stress. He does one thing at a time. Mind you. He also has a list of things he needs to do, but he does not really keep a list in his head like the rest of us.

He takes things as they come.

    I should learn from that!

Thirteen. This represents an improvement, because I used to keep many more viewer windows open. I’m trying to find ways to de-clutter my computers.

One cool Mac feature that has helped me tremendously is the Spaces feature in the Leopard Apple/Mac OS. The screen only shows one of 4 Spaces at a time, and I can set which programs I want to view in each Space in the Preferences. That way I can read and write Mail without having to also see iCal or Safari pages, but they are easy to view with a quick curser move to a specific corner. If I need a viewer window that is in another Space, I can quickly swing the curser to the designated corner and the 4 Spaces pop into view (mini versions), showing the open viewer windows, then I select the Space and viewer window I wish to view. If I need a viewer window that is in a Space where I am not currently working, I can drag the viewer window from one Space to another Space.

I also make use of Tabs to minimize the number of viewer windows open. I changed this in the preferences so that new viewer windows automatically open in Tabs instead of as a separate new viewer window. That alone was a huge de-clutterer.

I’ll admit that I’m a tab junkie. Most of the tabs are things that I want to go back and read or share with someone else. I even use two separate browsers so that when one fills up, I open the other. I’ve just never connected it to living simply.

Despite that, I do have a few tips… If it’s a tab I know I’ve read and will want to refer to later, I add it to my Delicious (delicious.com) list. If it’s a tab I want to share with my husband, I add it to my Shared Items on Google Reader. Both of these have handy Firefox bookmarklets.

Despite that, I do have a few tips… If it’s a tab I know I’ve read and will want to refer to later, I add it to my Delicious (delicious.com) list. If it’s a tab I want to share with my husband, I add it to my Shared Items on Google Reader. Both of these have handy Firefox bookmarklets.

um, four? I generally close things when I’m not using them. But, then, I don’t work. How many things can I possibly have open? Worst recently was searching for hotels and flights – then I had tons of tabs and multiple browsers open. UGH.

Okay, so I am in a totally different league. My computer just crashed (there was a power glitch and I had an OS message about removing a device improperly) and some parts of the OS weren’t working correctly, so I had to reboot. At that time, it asked if I wanted to quit Safari and it told me I had 92 windows and 272 tabs open. Since that was really a lot, I found this website by searching for “How many windows do you have open” in Safari.

So, how do I get that many open windows and tabs? Well, it goes like this. I am one of those really impatient types of persons. I have my Google search preferences set to show me 100 items in a search (so I don’t have to go to the next page ten times). If I want to view a link, I often hold the command key and click the link so it opens in the next tab. This way, I can continue to read other links in the search window while the tab is opening. I may view my new tab to check the results or I may open several more tabs in exactly that way. I can easily get from 2 to 5+ (or a lot more) tabs open by doing this.

I have been researching some science subjects and several of my hit lists have been pretty interesting and so those windows and tabs have remained open for several weeks at this point.

While Safari does allow me to reopen all of the windows and tabs from an earlier session, that is the only way I know to log them in a reasonable manner. I don’t want to bookmark them as they aren’t the kind of pages that link to new information I want. They are simply static topics that I have kept open only as visual reminders. I looked for a program that might log the open windows and tabs by date. That is more what I would like as it would let me retain the temporal record of open windows and delete all of the windows that I opened and closed that are part of the URL history. I know, there is a plist of the windows and tabs, but it is kind of user hostile. Well, that is how I ended up with so many windows and tabs open.

The downside is that since Safari can be fragile with flash and certain other content, by having many pages open, it crashes several times a week. I guess that is a sign for me to just reference the ideas in those pages and move on so they are no longer open.

i have 4 tabs/windows of IE open, 2 windows folders, and three other programs (PSE7 Organizer, Evernote, and Excel). That’s on my personal computer. I’m multi-tasking right now. My work computer is right next to me with 3 IE windows, 2 Excel documents, 2 Windows folders and Lotus Notes.

I’m pretty anal retentive and can NOT function with a million windows open. I think I may have actually done cartwheels when “tabs” entered the world of internet browsing. I kind of have a rule of sorts…I have one main IE window open with any tabs that are kind of “permanently relevant” at that time (depending on what I’m working on). If I want to click open to something else that is a more temporary visit, I choose to open in a new window. It’s a visual reminder that I’m supposed to glance at it and move on :)

I love the idea of having a temporary window, Holly — it sounds like a great system! I’m the same way about too many tabs/windows, and I tend to start losing focus if I have too many open.

I also use my open windows as a to-do list. By about 10:00 am, I will probably have 20+ windows open> They do overwhelm me though and sometimes bt the time I get to a page I am not even sure what brought me there and if I even want to read it, lol!
Funny thing is, I wrote a post a while back that used windows open as an analogy for being mentally overladed. Check it out if you’d like!

Great analogy, Bernice! You are exactly right — the more I try to do at once, the slower and less effective I am at everything!

Before I got married, some other ladies and I met on a crafting forum and ended up creating webpages so that we could share with each other pictures of the crafts and projects we were working on.

I also wrote a hand-drawn zine for a few years after my daughter was born, but soon found blogging a much easier to reach an audience and connect with like-minded people. That blog went through many transformations to become what is now the present day Rockin’ Granola.

At the end of 2009 is when Tsh asked me if I’d be interested in editing Simple Kids.

    You know the rest :-)

What I totally LOVE is that some of those very same women that I met through that crafting forum (almost a decade ago) are still reading and sharing with each other today through blogs. I think that is pretty cool!

  • HonestMommy

I started a blog called The Honest Mommy a few years ago because I needed an outlet for the thoughts, feelings, and struggles that weren’t appropriate for the grandparents and friends oriented blog where I posted photos and general family updates. To this day, only my husband knows about this blog; my readers are people who find my blog through search engines or other means.
Frequent topics include GTD (Getting Things Done by David Allen), SAHM burnout, and anything that’s knocking around in my head at the time.

I started blogging in 2007. I began for myself. A place to write thoughts and general things I wanted to remember. It was two years before I shared it with anyone besides my immediate family. I still blog for myself although I participate in some link parties now. There are lots of areas I could blog about exclusively: marriage, homeschooling, homemaking, child-rearing, or grandparenting for instance. I really don’t want it to become a “job” though. Did I answer your question?!

I “discovered” blogs a couple of years ago and started one as a place online to post my writing. Before that, I had a little devotional that I emailed once in a while to a subscribed list of people. I was so excited to find a format where I could store all my articles. I had no idea how my blog would grow and turn into something more than my mom and husband read :) Now, I love blogging and I’m glad I “discovered” it!

  • http://www.OahuMom.com Lisa @ Oahu Mom

After doing a private blog for a couple years to update family and friends I decided I wanted to try a public blog and decided to write about things to do here on Oahu, Hawaii with kids. I started the blog as a way to motivate me to get out and have new experiences with my kids rather than just sticking to our same routines, beaches, activities, restaurants, etc. and I thought that if I could make a little money while I was at it that would be a bonus.

  • The Discombobulated Mommy

I started my initial blog as a digital scrapbook to keep family and friends up to date with what’s going on with us. I started my new blog “The Discombobulated Mommy” to share my joys and challenges of being a stay at home with others. I guess in a way it’s a niche blog about motherhood. While I don’t blog professionally, I’m definitely interested in learning how to begin so that I can possibly earn an income and stay at home with my kids at the same time.
